One of the first criteria for an R&D project to qualify according to the DTI Guidelines 2004 is that it has to be in a field of science or technology. In other words, if your project is not in one of the fields below, it will not qualify for R&D tax relief.There is additionally a specific exclusion in the guidelines for technological advances in the field of maths.

To ensure a consistent international definition of R&D, the OECD publishes a classification system in the Frascati Manual that details the fields of science and technology.
